London Luton airport's easyjet to change flights

London Luton airport's budget airline easyJet has just recently announced that it plans on making some new cuts to its services.

This time the cuts will involve the airline pulling out of one airport and reducing its capacity at another by 20 percent.

Easyjet confirmed that, after a 90 day consultation, with its staff, it will be closing its base at East Midlands Airport and cutting capacity at its home base at London Luton Airport by 20 percent. On January 5th, the airline will stop all of its operations at East Midlands Airport.

The spokesperson also confirmed that the carrier will be reducing its capacity at its base at London Luton Airport by 20 percent. He said that this follows airport operator Abertis and Luton Borough Council’s failure to recognize the commercial realities of the recession and address rising airport costs.

Due to the rises at the airport, the airport is no longer competitive, so easyJet will be taking 20 percent of their business elsewhere.

M1 JUNCTIONS 10 TO 10A SPUR LUTON – REPAIRS TO NEWLANDS ROAD BRIDGE

Work to renovate the bridge over Newlands Road on the M1 spur near Luton, began on Thursday 17 September. This work involves replacing the bridge parapets and carrying out drainage and resurfacing work.

While the work is being carried out two lanes will remain open in both directions during peak hours until the work is completed in spring 2010.

There will be lane closures during offpeak hours and a 40 mph speed limit will be in force throughout the works. There will also be overnight closures of Newlands Road between Slip End village and the A1081 London Road on occasion during the winter months.

Industrial action and service restrictions from the £5.5bn Thameslink programme are causing headaches for business travellers to Luton Airport.

Business travellers using First Capital Connect (FCC) trains to reach two of Britain's busiest airports are risking missing their flights because of disruption due to industrial action and redevelopment works.

While city airports across Europe have long had excellent and relatively cheap train lines into the city centre, British airports rarely compare favourably.

But London's busy Luton and Gatwick airports have done better than most, with fast train connections to the capital and beyond operated by a number of train companies including FCC.

Now both airports are suffering from hugely reduced train services due to industrial action by FCC drivers that began in mid-November and shows no sign of ending.

The problems have been caused by drivers choosing not to work overtime and on their rest days as part of a pay dispute. The train company is offering drivers a pay deal which involves no increase in salaries for the year from April 2009, an increase of 3% or more for the year starting April 2010 and a lump sum payment of £200 next April.

FCC’s increasing reliance on drivers working overtime has led to at least half of the company’s trains on the Bedford to Brighton route being cancelled. Information on the rail disruption is not always clear or easy to find either. For instance low-cost airline easyJet makes no mention of reduced rail services from Luton on its website, where it suggests “First Capital Connect also connects London Luton airport and Gatwick airport”.

Luton Airport annouced that another new low cost airline will start flying from there.

The new airline to operate from Luton Airport is the airline Danubewings which is to start operating from Luton Airport, it has been revealed.

From December 1st, the carrier will offer three weekly flights to and from Poprad in Slovakia.

The airline will use a Boeing 737 and has promised passengers low fares.

Flights are available to book now on the carrier's official website.

Simon Harley, Luton Airport's airline manager, expressed delight at the arrival of Danubewings.

Luton airport's EasyJet's annual profits drop 14%

Luton airport's EasyJet's said this week that it's profit for the fiscal year fell 14% as the U.K. budget carrier hedged fuel needs at high prices. But added that profits should improve substantially next year as fuel costs fall.

The airline posted net profit of £71.2 million ($119.9 million) in the 12 months to Sept. 30, compared with £83.2 million a year earlier. Revenue rose 13% to £2.67 billion from £2.36 billion, boosted namely by increases in charges made to customers to check-in baggage.

"We see a tough winter ahead," easyJet Chief Executive Andy Harrison said. "We are focussing our efforts on further cost savings and efficiency improvements together with optimizing route profitability and aircraft allocation."

The company said capacity, or the number of seats filled, for the first half of the year and full year is expected to increase by 10% compared to this year. Over the next five years, it will grow at 7.5% per annum, easyJet said, which will allow the airline to expand its European short-haul market share to 10% from 7%.

The airline has benefited from passengers trading down from legacy carriers during the recession, and has been snapping up slots that retreating airlines are leaving behind, which will allow easyJet to grow more smoothly once demand returns.

Passenger revenue per seat rose 5.9% to £40.70, but was down 1.9% on a constant currency basis. Costs per seat were higher due to lower utilization of aircraft during the first six months of 2009. While total aircraft increased by 16% during the year to 174.1 aircraft on average from 150.1 aircraft, the number of seats flown increased only 1.8%.

EasyJet, which now carries more passengers originating in continental Europe than in the U.K., is attempting to lower costs as it becomes increasingly difficult to raise fares during the economic downturn. It said it expects to deliver about £190 million in cost savings by end of its fiscal 2012, up from the £125 million of annual savings by 2011.

"To see the words 'airline' and 'profits' in the same sentence is something of a rarity in the current environment, but easyJet continues to capitalize on its no-frills offering," said Richard Hunter, head of U.K. equities at Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers.

Shares of easyJet lost 3.1% to 380 pence on a broadly flat London market.

The report, 'Better Rail Stations', has been compiled after extensive research in Britain and other countries. The main finding is that many busy British stations are slipping behind the standards achieved by other businesses with a public face, such as retail chains, and that present investment plans will only deal adequately with the largest, flagship stations. For now priority should be given to introducing minimum station standards when new franchises start and dealing with as many problems as possible with existing funding.

Major improvements are needed in bus/tram/rail integration, as well as facilities for cyclists. It also points out that signage is 'tending to fragment into different lettering styles and colours through individual branding. This lack of consistency makes it harder for customers to focus on the relevant information, and can cost up to £2m in resigning when franchises change hands'.

The report follows hard on the heels of Network Rail's own stations report, which was published last week and summarised plans to invest £3.25 billion between now and 2014. Much of this, however, will be spent at a relatively small number of key locations, such as Birmingham New Street.

The tax currently generates £2 billion for the Chancellor's coffers each year. The new regime is expected to bring in £2.5billion, rising to £3.5billion by 2012.

Passengers now pay £10 APD on economy flights within Europe and £40 to destinations beyond, with premium seats taxed at double those rates.

The new charges will be split into four bands based on the distance between London and the destination.

A family of four travelling economy class to the Caribbean, band C, would have to pay a total of £200 in APD this November and £300 in November 2010.

Travellers to Luton airport will face disruption on Sunday as train drivers refuse to work rest days.

luton airport train operator First Capital Connect (FCC) is advising people to make alternative arrangements if they are planning to travel to London on Sunday as there will be a very limited rail service on its great northern route owing to a lack of available drivers.

The disruption is being caused by drivers refusing to work rest days and overtime, which they are no longer obliged to do, following the start of pay talks.

This will mean very few FCC services from Hitchin, Stevenage, Letchworth GC and Royston stations and London.

From Hitchin and Stevenage there will be a bus service to and from Luton Airport Parkway where travellers can catch FCC Thameslink trains to and from central London stations. People planning to travel from Letchworth GC are being advised to either drive to Luton Airport Parkway or go to either Hitchin or Stevenage and get the bus service.

At Royston there will be a bus service to Whittlesford where travellers can get trains to London on the National Express East Anglia service.

National Express East Coast main line services will run as normal between Stevenage and London King's Cross. FCC tickets will also be accepted on London bus services via any reasonable route.

Mercenary Simon Mann returns at Luton Airport

The recently pardoned ex SAS soldier Simon Mann was finally reunited yesterday with the family at Luton airport.

No Metropolitan Police officers were waiting for Mann yesterday, although police sources confirmed that they intended to speak to him “very soon”. A spokesman said: “We can confirm we are investigating whether any offences may have been disclosed in this country. We are aware of developments but are not prepared to discuss them further.”

Arriving in a private jet, Mann, 57, said it was the “most wonderful homecoming I could ever have imagined”. He is likely to receive lucrative offers from publishers and newspapers seeking answers to questions that remain over the bungled 2004 plot to topple Equatorial Guinea’s government.

The former SAS soldier touched down at Luton at 1.32pm, having been released from his Equatorial Guinea prison cell 33 years earlier than expected. He said that he was looking forward to meeting his youngest son, whom he had never met.

A faulty TV aerial stopped pilots talking to air traffic control at Luton airport.

A signal booster on the television set of a Bedfordshire boy has been found to be interfering with aircraft.

The aerial on 12-year-old Nicky Chamberlain's bedroom TV was disrupting communications between pilots and air traffic control at Luton airport.

Communications regulator Ofcom traced the problem to the home in Knaves Hill, Linslade, 18 miles from the airport.

Nicky's dad, Dave Chamberlain said: "I got rid of the booster and put it in a landfill site."

Mr Chamberlain said: "I came home to find an Ofcom engineer parked outside the house. It was bizarre. I had never heard of anything like this before."

"Nicky had the booster for a couple of years and there had been no problem. Recently they changed the flight-path and that must have caused the problem with pilots talking to the airport."

He added: "We are decorating Nicky's bedroom now and when that's finished we will get him a new aerial that does not interfere with passing planes."

A spokesperson for communications regulator Ofcom said: "It is not common for something like this to happen.

"We have field engineers who go around the country investigating for radio interference. In this case the faulty aerial booster was found to be interfering with the pilot's radio."

Luton airport parking is set to become easier as LTN is confirmed as key location for Hilton Garden Inn as second hotel announced.

Naked children photos will not be taken by X-rays claims airport security

Photographs of naked children will be not be subjected to X-ray body scanners which produces images of flight passengers, airport officials have said.

Concerned travellers can opt out of the virtual strip search but the airport planned to let children take part if their parents gave consent.

Civil rights group Action on Rights for Children (Arch) contacted them this week though to point out the legal issue of security workers creating and examining indecent images of children.

Arch national director Terri Dowty said: ''It's not right to put the machine operators in the position where they are being asked to break the law

''This is not about whether we think the scanner is a good idea or a bad idea. It's just not lawful and falls under the terms of strict liability. nder present legislation the taking of images of children in this way cannot be done.''

The 12-month trial of the RapiScan machine which enables staff to spot any hidden explosives or weapons is due to begin early next month.

Electromagnetic waves are beamed on to passengers while they stand in a booth and a virtual three-dimensional ''naked'' image is created from the reflected energy.

The black and white images produced will only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it is deleted.

It aims to make the check-in process much quicker for passengers who will not have to remove their coats, shoes or belts on a traditional ''pat down'' search.

Frequent flyers do not need to worry about radiation from the low-level X-ray with passengers able to go through the machine 5,000 times a year without worrying, said airport officials.

The scanners, which cost £80,000 each, were also trialled at Heathrow Airport in 2004.

Security officials in the United States have pioneered their use at New York and Los Angeles airports, and they are gradually being rolled out in other airports in the country.

Luton airport is being criticised by EasyJet who is continuing to put pressure on Luton Borough Council to become involved in the dispute over landing charges at London Luton Airport with another scathing advertisement, this time based on the well-known “Labour isn’t working” ad.

The original ad was created by Saatchi & Saatchi in 1979 and easyJet’s version has been developed by Publicis.

It will appear in regional press and is the second in a series created to encourage the council to step in and help resolve the row over airport charges.

EasyJet has said that increased charges for its planes are forcing the airline to look at cutting expansion and jobs at the airport.

Paul Simmons, the UK regional manager, says: “The Council seem to be hiding behind technical reasons as to why they can’t get involved in the current situation at Luton Airport, which they own."

But the same “technical reasons” haven’t stopped them banking a significant proportion of the passenger charges, which every passenger pays when using the Airport. Airport costs have risen by 25% in the last three years and, the Council’s position of being happy to take the benefits but none of the responsibility of this policy is unsustainable.”

A Luton Borough Council spokesperson says: " The Council will continue to use its influence in relation to this process and is very disappointed that the main effect of the advert may be to worry people whose jobs might not be at risk.

"Luton Borough Council is acutely aware of the difficulties currently faced by employees of easyJet and others dependent on the airport. At a recent Council meeting a resolution was passed urging a resumption of negotiations between the airline and the operator of the airport, London Luton Airport Operations Ltd (LLAOL). The Council strongly supports the retention of easyJet as a partner in the town, along with the employment and other benefits it brings.

"However, neither the Council, nor the company it controls which owns the airport, has any shareholding in LLAOL which is a private company owned by a consortium of Spanish companies including Abertis. The airport charges payable by easyJet are based on a contract which it entered into with LLAOL, not the Council nor the company it controls."

She adds that the income generated by the airport concession, which in the year ended 31st March 2009 was £18 million after Corporation Tax and interest payments, is substantially used to fund the delivery of services and capital investment for the benefit of the town and its taxpayers.

Air passengers returning from overseas to London airports will be able to pay to jump the immigration queue under a new fast track system.

A trial is to be introduced next year at the airport’s Terminal 4 that will allow travellers without biometric passports to pay to use automated gates. A charge, reportedly up to £50, would be imposed, though the Home Office stressed that the size of the new stealth tax had yet to be decided.

It is the latest add-on charge to increase the cost of travelling.

Luton airport already allows passengers to jump the security queue if they pay extra, while British Airways will introduce charges tomorrow for passengers to choose their seats.

Now BAA, Heathrow’s owner and Britain’s largest airport operator, is preparing a scheme with the UK Border Agency that would introduce new automated barriers for immigration checks. At present, three UK airports have biometric gates — Stansted, Bristol and Manchester — with the facility expected to be rolled out to seven other terminals.

Around 90,000 British passengers a year already avoid immigration queues at Heathrow by undergoing an IRIS test — which matches their eyes against information on a database — while presenting their biometric passport.

Biometric passports, which contain a computer chip storing details about the holder’s face — such as the distances between eyes, nose, mouth and ears — have been used in the UK since March 2006 and are now standard when passports are reissued. About 19.7mn UK travellers now have biometric passports.

A Home Office spokesman said: “New automatic gates using biometric information provide effective security and faster checks for legitimate travellers. There are no plans to scrap IRIS. ACS+ is in development at this time and we anticipate that more information on the scheme will be available by the end of the year.”

‘Trusted travellers’ from outside the European Union, such as business executives, would also be able to sign up for the scheme.

Passengers who hold biometric passports would not pay. EU travellers with biometric documents would also be exempt from charges.

The alternative to paying the charge would be for travellers to renew their passport early, which costs from £77.50 for it to be posted out, to £129.50 for a same-day service.

It has been three years since what was previously described as the airport 'experience' became the definition of a travel nightmare.

The emergency measures imposed overnight in August 2006 — at the peak of the summer holiday season — threw airports into chaos.

In the immediate aftermath, 2,000 flights were cancelled as extra security checks were introduced. There was a ban on hand luggage larger than small laptop cases, and passengers taking any liquids or toiletries into the cabin.

It was several weeks before the rules were relaxed to allow 100 millilitre bottles of liquids onboard. But it was several months before airports were able to recruit 3,500 more screening staff.

The resulting delays, missed flights and confusion on what was, and was not, allowed on board was a ruinous experience for passengers — and the airports.

The liquid ban subsequently cost Britain's aviation industry more than £100million in increased security costs and lost duty-free sales.

Two tonnes of alcohol a month are still being confiscated at Heathrow alone, along with thousands of bottles of perfume and other toiletries.

Since 2006, recession has further savaged aviation profits and prompted airlines to introduce a raft of charges for online checking, luggage and ticket changes. In the past week alone, British Airways and Ryanair have again changed their baggage rules.

Sterling plummets after Bank of England warns on rates

Luton Airport restores US immigration checks

Special arrangements with the UK Border Agency (UKBA) for passengers and crew have been made to complete immigration procedures at its London Luton Airport.

The move follows a UKBA decision earlier this year not to continue the previously standing practice of allowing business aircraft operators to use the pre-clearance procedure, thereby avoiding the inconvenience of requiring passengers and crew to have their passports checked in the main airport terminal.

Harrods claims to be the only Luton FBO to provide this service, which is available between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. daily. According to the UKBA, the new policy of not routinely making staff available to clear business aircraft is supposed to be applied at all airports in the London area.

Luton airport cancels dropping off charges plan

Luton Airport has shelved plans to charge drivers £1 to drop passengers off at the terminal following an outcry.

These “kiss and drop” charges were due to come into force recently but have been put on hold until further notice.

Luton would have been the first airport in the country to charge for dropping off passengers outside the terminal, although Birmingham forces everyone to use the nearby short-stay car park.

“We haven’t implemented it yet,” said a Luton airport spokesman. “There are some other things in the project we need to work on, There is no fixed date for it, we will advise passengers in due course. Nothing has been set in stone.”

Asked if the scheme had been dropped completely, the airport spokesman added: “I don’t have any information on that at the moment.”

Passenger groups hope this could be followed by the scrapping of other additional charges being imposed by airports, which have included a levy for clear plastic bags to take fluids onto the aircraft.

It comes as the aviation industry continues to suffer the consequences of a world recession, with passenger numbers down, carriers failing and routes being dropped.

“We are pleased that they have done this,” said a spokesman for the Air Transport Users Council.

“We hope this will mark a reversal of the trend which has seen airports charging passengers directly for services. Passenger should be charged directly through their plane ticket.”

Budget airline Easyjet has called on Luton council to help make Luton Airport more competitive.

Easyjet chief executive Andy Harrison has written to Luton Borough Council urging the authority to help reduce the airport's costs.

The letter came as 100 Easyjet cabin crew protested in Luton over planned cuts at the town's airport.

The council said it had no power to intervene in negotiations between Easyjet and the airport operator.

A spokeswoman for operator London Luton Airport Operations said the firm had nothing to add to a statement issued earlier this month when Easyjet first announced its proposed cuts.

'Airport should grow'

The statement said: "We regret that Easyjet has chosen not to take up the improved commercial terms on offer from the airport, which are highly competitive."

In an open letter to leader of Luton Borough Council Hazel Simmons, Mr Harrison urged the council to liaise between the airline and council-appointed operating company, to lower costs.

The letter said: "Luton airport should be growing not shrinking.

"The council cannot escape its responsibility to make the airport competitive.

"The council own the airport, the council take more than half of the airport charges paid by Easyjet."

'Enormous sympathy'

Easyjet said that because of a 25% increase in airport costs over the past three years, Luton Airport had become uncompetitive.

Mr Harrison said it had already reduced its flying at Luton by 14%, and now has plans to reduce it further by 20%.

Ms Simmons said: "We have enormous sympathy for the Easyjet workers.

But negotiations are between Easyjet and the airport operator - London Luton Airport Operations Ltd - which is a private consortium.

easyJet has announced plans to reduce services from Luton airport by 20% and to close its East Midlands base.

The popular low cost airline is blaming spiralling costs at the UK airports, including the controversial Airport Passenger Duty (APD), during tough times for all air carriers.

easyJet has opened a formal 90 day consultation with its crew at Luton and East Midlands as well as Belfast, Bristol, Newcastle and Stansted where 40 pilot and cabin crew jobs are also at risk. The company hopes to find alternative positions for as many of the affected employees as possible.

easyJet operates on more than 400 routes in 27 countries with over 170 aircraft. Last year more than 44 million passengers flew with the no-frills airline.

London Luton Airport is one of the UK's largest airports and carried over 10 million passengers in 2008.

Employing close to 500 staff, the airport is a major economic driver for the region, as well as a major base for 'low cost' or 'no frills' air travel.

The airport is operated and developed by a consortium of which Abertis Infraestructuras, a leading European infrastructure provider, is a 90 per cent majority shareholder and Aena Internacional, the international business arm of Aena, the Spanish national airport and air traffic control organisation, is a 10 per cent shareholder.

In January 2008 London Luton Airport launched its Community Engagement Strategy, which set out the Airport's formal commitments to the community up to 2012. The strategy focuses on three action areas, 'A Better Environment', 'A Vibrant Neighbourhood' and 'A Growing Economy', identifying priority programmes in each one.

The London Luton Airport Annual Report, published in January 2009, outlines new and more challenging commitments for Community Engagement in 2009 that include a 5% increase in recycling, commitment to a £50,000 Airport 'Community Fund' and employee training that will ensure 70% of all London Luton Airport Operations Ltd. managers and supervisory staff complete NVQ Level 2 personal development training.

London Luton Airport launched its new Community Trust Fund in January 2009. The fund has been established to support local community initiatives that positively contribute towards the aims and objectives of the Airport's Community Engagement Strategy.

The new £50,000 fund is open to groups from Luton, Stevenage, South Bedfordshire, North Hertfordshire, Aylesbury Vale and St.Albans district - which includes Harpenden. The Fund is independently administered by the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation on behalf of London Luton Airport. Grants of between £250 and £3,000 per organisation are available.
